Darmstadt Mitte

Convenient area near the city

As the name suggests, Mitte is the bustling center of the city and city life. This is the district to live in for those who put convenience first.
Mitte consists of the commercial area around the Old Palace and the surrounding residential area. Shops, banks, clinics, public facilities, etc., are in close vicinity to each other, therefore making it possible to reach everything by foot or bicycle. The Darmstadt University of Technology campus is situated to the north. Its students can often be seen relaxing on the lawn and taking walks in the adjacent park, Herrnggarten.

Shopping in Mitte

The Luisencenter, a shopping complex opened in the 1970s, offers a diverse range of clothing stores, supermarkets, bakeries, and more. It and the various specialty shops surrounding it, such as bookstores, shoe stores, kitchenware stores, and jewelry stores, all together make this area the go-to shopping spot in the city. On Wednesdays and Saturdays, the open-air market takes place in Marktplatz, with vegetable, wine, cheese and flower stands.

Parks in Mitte

Herrngarten, located behind the Old Palace, is the oldest and largest park in Darmstadt city center. Originally a garden belonging to the palace, it was opened to the public in the 19th century.  The small pond, a children’s playground, and the restaurant with terrace seats make this park the perfect spot to unwind from the hustle and bustle of the city center.
