Darmstadt Nord

An area with convenience and a taste of history

This is the district to be in if you are looking to live the stylish, urban lifestyle.
Darmstadt-Nord, located to the north of the city center, is the most populated area in the city. It consists of two districts: Martinsviertel on the east side, and Johannesviertel on the west.
Martinsviertel expanded and developed during the industrial revolution of the late 19th century, as more and more residents flowed into the area from the suburbs. The district retains its beauty with many original buildings that survived the airstrikes of World War II. The narrow cobblestone streets are lined with unique cafes and restaurants, shops with natural foods and eco-friendly products, and fashionable novelty goods stores. The picturesque townscape, with its beautifully preserved old houses, attracts those who want to live in style. In recent years, the district has seen an increased inflow of money from property investment. Real estate prices have soared in some areas, making it a luxury residential area, out of reach for those earning the average income.

In Johannesviertel, like in its eastern counterpart Martinsviertel, the many Art Nouveau buildings from the 19th century are still very much part of everyday life, nowadays being used as residences, offices, and shops.

Shopping in Darmstadt-Nord

In addition to typical supermarkets such as Rewe and Penny, there are many specialized shops to explore in the area: Terra Verde, a natural foods supermarket; Unverpackt, which sells products by weight and without packaging; and supermarkets which stock food from Africa and the Middle East.

Parks in Darmstadt-Nord

While the area is dotted with small parks and playgrounds, no big parks exist in this district. To relax in nature, residents need to go to Herrngarten in the neighboring district of Mitte.
