Darmstadt Ost

Quiet residential area with a pond

Darmstadt-Ost is made up of three areas: Woogsviertel, Komponistenviertel, and Mathildenhöhe.

Woogsviertel is the area around Woog, which was originally a fire water pond built in the 16th century. Nowadays the pond has become a place of relaxation for citizens seeking cool in the summer.
Komponistenviertel is an area lined with mansions and its gardens, which were built according to a residential development plan in the beginning of the 20th century. Mathildenhöhe started as a village of artists gathered at the invitation of the Grand Duke of Hesse-Darmstadt at the end of the 19th century. Mathildenhöhe, in particular, is the most luxurious residential area in Darmstadt, with its many Art Nouveau buildings that have retained its original beauty.

Shopping in Darmstadt-Ost

Some small supermarkets can be found in Woogsviertel, but there are very few shops in Komponistenviertel and Mathildenhöhe.

Parks in Darmstadt-Ost

In summer, people can enjoy a swim in the Woog and gaze at the gorgeous roses in full bloom in the gardens of Rosenhöhe, a park with deep ties to Hesse’s Grand Ducal family.
